Several times in this column I have mentioned the removal from the market of different chemicals for agricultural pest control. I have complained, if you will, that these chemicals were highly effective, and in losing them the grower has lost a valuable defense mechanism for his crop. All of this is correct. Although we were late taking off, we finished our first and only leg of the first day–IFR from Jacksonville to NAS Pensacola–with no problems. The plan for the next day was to launch around 0800 and to stop in west Texas for the night. We briefed the next morning, and, while the plane captains completed their turn-around (TA) inspections, we checked weather and laid out our flight plan for the day. The first stop would be Acadiana, La. We filed IFR flight plans since the weather wasnt good enough for VFR. When we arrived at the flight line, the plane captain for my aircraft told us he was concerned with maintenance discrepancies found during his TA. The HAC wanted to discuss these discrepancies with the Jacksonville squadron who had turned the aircraft over to us. After talking to them, the HAC still wanted to talk to one of our squadron reps in San Diego. We knew our squadron wanted to keep both aircraft together, so the other crew waited until our aircraft was ready to go. Several hours later and after numerous phone calls, countless ground turns, and a 30-minute flight to test the system, everything checked good. We finally were ready to get on the road. It was now 1400, and the two HACs went to base ops to file flight plans for the third time, while the other H2P and I readied the aircraft for departure. The field now was VFR, but since we had filed IFR the two previous times, I assumed the plan would stay the same. HEALTH Secretary Alan Johnson ordered an inquiry today into why many people still do not have access to an NHS dentist despite billions of pounds of investment. Experts have been drafted in to identify obstacles to seeing a National Health dentist in many areas of the country. The move follows continued criticism that the number of people seen by NHS dentists has fallen steeply since a controversial overhaul of services. Some 1.2 million fewer patients visited dentists in the two years to June than in the period before new contracts were introduced.
TWO new NHS dentists are set to be recruited in Whitley Bay. The move is as part of pounds 300,000 investment by North Tyneside Primary Care Trust to improve access to NHS dentistry in the borough. Details on how patients will be able to access the services will be announced once the dentists have been appointed. Chief executive Chris Reed said: Im really pleased to announce this additional investment in NHS dentistry for North Tyneside.

A U.S. Senate vote on the Defense Department authorization bill, including more than $56 million for military construction and maintenance in Oklahoma, has been set aside for Congress to focus on budget and tax matters. Under the bill, Fort Sill would receive the biggest chunk of the state appropriations, with $25 million for barracks rehabilitation. The bill includes $9.6 million for work on the B-2 software maintenance facility at Tinker Air Force Base and $11 million for land acquisition at Altus Air Force Base. Some compare todays coastal housing market, where prices increased the most, to the investment craze that led to the technology stock crash a few years ago. Home prices in some regions have more than doubled in the past five years, leading to concerns that the speculative bubble might burst. They argue that, if marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other drugs were legalized, several positive things would probably occur: (1) drug prices would fall; (2) users would obtain their drugs at low, government-regulated prices, and they would no longer be forced to resort to crime in order to support their habits, (3) levels of drug-related crime, and particularly violent crime, would significantly decline, resulting in less crowded courts, jails, and prisons (this would allow law-enforcement personnel to focus their energies on the “real criminals” in society); and the drug production, distribution, and sale would no longer be controlled by organized crime, and thus such criminal syndicates as the Colombian cocaine “cartels,” the Jamaican “posses,” and the various “mafias” around the country and the world would be decapitalized, and the violence associated with drug distribution rivalries would be eliminated. By contrast, the anti-legalization camp argues that violent crime would not necessarily decline in a legalized drug market. In fact, there are three reasons why it might actually increase. First, removing the criminal sanctions against the possession and distribution of illegal drugs would make them more available and attractive and, hence, would create large numbers of new users. Second, an increase in use would lead to a greater number of dysfunctional addicts who could not support themselves, their habits, or their lifestyles through legitimate means. Hence crime would be their only alternative. Third, more users would mean more of the violence associated with the ingestion of drugs. These divergent points of view tend to persist because the relationships between drugs and crime are quite complex and because the possible outcomes of a legalized drug market are based primarily on speculation. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, our pets dental health is the most overlooked aspect of their care, and more than 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show some signs of gum disease by age 3. We cant check the sink for pink when it comes to our dogs and cats, so what exactly should we be looking for when checking an animals mouth for dental problems? The most common symptom of dental problems in our dogs and cats is bad breath. But dont rely on the breath test alone. The best thing to do is to pull up their lips and look at their teeth and gums. The gums, especially the gum closest to the base of the tooth, should be a healthy pink color and there should be no swelling or bleeding, which would indicate gingivitis. Healthy teeth should be white, not yellowed or discolored, and you should not see any evidence of tartar buildup on the teeth or at the gum line. When doing this exam, check for broken or chipped teeth. If you notice any problems at all, schedule an appointment with your vet so he can examine and treat any problems.

The low levels of sodium pentobarbital that dogs might receive through their food are unlikely to cause any health problems, according to an FDA study. During the 1990s, the FDAs Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) received reports from veterinarians that pentobarbital seemed to be losing its effectiveness for anesthesia in dogs. Based on these reports, the center decided to investigate the theory that the dogs were exposed to pentobarbital through dog food, and that this exposure was making them less responsive to pentobarbital when it was used as a drug. CVM developed and used a sophisticated process to detect and quantify minute amounts of pentobarbital in dog food. Upon finding pentobarbital residues in some samples of dry dog food, CVM scientists conducted further tests that led them to conclude that dogs eating dry dog food are unlikely to have any adverse health effects from the low levels of pentobarbital found in the dog food samples tested.
Its no surprise with recent veterinary claims that most regular dog and cat foods do not provide all of the essential ingredients necessary for optimum pet health, and many of these same foods contain slaughtered animal by-products.

But of course I jumped at the chance. After all, one leaves ones car, with its inexplicable engine chatter, one headlight malfunctioning, and a brake problem, in the corner garage for the mechanics to fuss over, and a day or so later it emerges in fine working order. Why not such a transformation in my golf game? The main problem with my game is what I carry in my mind during the process of hitting a ball. I have been told great golfers have an image of where the ball is going to land . . . a distant green, a spot on the fairway favorable for an approach to the green, a knoll on the other side of a pond, and so on. On the putting surface, the track of the ball to the hole is in their minds eye as exact as the lines on a graph. I have tried this, of course. What is quite visible in my minds eye when I get ready to hit the shot is the flag on the green, not the base of an equipment shed wall where my ball ends up.
